Kara Alaimo, PhD is a communication professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she created the university’s academic programs in social media. Her book “Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls – And How We Can Take It Back,” which explains how social media is affecting every aspect of the lives of women and girls and what we can do about it, was published in March 2024. She has been writing opinion and analysis pieces for CNN about how social media is affecting us all since 2016. She is a former spokesperson in the Obama administration and communicator at the United Nations and speaks frequently to educators, students and parents in schools about how to handle kids’ social media use. Project Summary: Each semester, the students in Türkiye deliver a presentation to us on best communication practices in Türkiye. My Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) students subsequently develop a campaign to promote a company in Türkiye and present it to the students in Türkiye and their professor for feedback on whether it is well adapted to the market. Similarly, FDU students deliver a presentation on best communication practices in the US to the students in Türkiye. The students in Türkiye subsequently develop a campaign to promote a product in the US and present it to us so we can provide feedback on whether it is well adapted for our market.
