Dr. Jie Zhang is a Professor of Special Education at State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport. She earned her Ph.D. in Exceptional Learning from Tennessee Technological University. Her research focuses on intervention efficacy for children with disabilities, services for culturally and linguistically diverse children and families, and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in higher education pedagogy and assessment. At the national or international level, she has published 37 peer-reviewed articles, 11 book chapters, one co-edited book, as well as 93 conference presentations and 23 invited workshops. Since 2018, Zhang has taught COIL-enhanced courses with partner universities across Brazil, China, France, Mexico, Sweden, and Ukraine. She received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Open SUNY Online Teaching Ambassador Award, Outstanding Academic Advising Award, inaugural Outstanding Global Engagement Award, and most recently, Outstanding Service to the University Award.

Project Summary: In the most recent COIL project, Dr. Jie Zhang, a Professor of Special Education at SUNY Brockport in the United States, Dr. Mariana Sokol, a Professor of Foreign Languages at Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University in Ukraine, and Dr. Cynthia Boyer, an Assistant Professor of Anglo-American Studies at Institut National Universitaire Champollion in France have co-taught a three-way COIL project since Fall 2021. This COIL project aimed to cultivate students’ intercultural competencies and digital literacy through authentic learning opportunities, immersive cross-cultural experiences, and structured, purposeful teamwork.
