Alyssa Madramootoo is a Junior majoring in Human Development and Family Studies at SUNY Oneonta. She holds an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and Science from SUNY Broome Community College. Alyssa faced many challenges as a Guyanese-American and a first-generation college student, but they have not prevented her from reaching her goals. During her two years at SUNY Broome Alyssa became involved in almost everything; the EOP (Education Opportunity Program) summer program to prepare her for Freshman year, she joined Student Assembly as a Senator then later helped create the Chief of Staff position and was voted to take on that role. Alyssa has also been a loyal member of Love You Like A Sister (LYLAS) a women’s empowerment club and became President. Alyssa also worked with Public Safety at BCC, which helped land a job as a Resident Assistant during her last year on campus. Alyssa also took a COIL course at BCC called Storytelling and Heritage which began with virtual exchange between BCC students and a class in Mexico, then ended with an actual physical exchange with both cohorts traveling to visit the other in their home countries. Because of the amazing opportunity, Alyssa is inspired to push other students to experience what it is like to travel abroad.

Ozzy Rios is a major in Secondary Education/Social Studies with a minor in Educational Psychology at SUNY-Oneonta. He was born and raised in upstate rural New York where his dual identity was unique to the community. Maintaining Spanish for him was a family private effort since there was no community to support bilingualism. Ozzy took advantage of his close relationship to his parents’ country, Colombia, while visiting during childhood, but only realized this potential until arriving at college and finding opportunities to engage in COIL. Ozzy conducted a study abroad in Korea during summer 2024. Previously, he had assisted a COIL teaching with Japan and conducted a research field trip abroad on “Smart Cities in Colombia” (March 2024). Mr. Rios is currently a senior and has started student teaching through the “ESL/SILP” conversation course for international students and ELLs enrolled. Ozzy works on campus as the manager of “the Dragon’s Lair”, a free gaming service for SUNY Oneonta students, at this position he interacts with diverse student populations, and proposes activities involving different organizations on campus and the general student body. He will be completing student teaching in the spring, to graduate May 2025.
