COILing across a decade: Reflections and New Directions upon the occasion of the COIL Center’s 10th Anniversary

We invite proposals that broadly support this year’s conference themes for presentations based upon research and/or reflective practice in a range of formats. Presentations can be from those involved in teaching and/or supporting COIL or COIL-type programs. Presentation proposals are also encouraged from the international education, instructional design, or other areas which would be of benefit to our attendees.

Joint proposals, including those that represent the collaboration of inter- or intra- departmental or institutional teams, those which are designed to foster significant audience participation, or panels which bring in student perspectives, are particularly encouraged.

 This Year's Themes and Topics include:

  • What Changes Hath Time Wrought? Reflections on COIL Initiatives/Courses Over the Years
  • What Does the Next Decade Hold for COIL?
  • Lessons Learnt from Growing, Embedding and Sustaining COIL
  • Student Perspectives and Voices from COIL Exchanges and Experiences (accepted students will be offered complimentary conference registration)
  • COILing for Employability: Teaching and Learning 21st Century skills
  • Increasing the Impact: Global Citizenship and Social Justice through COIL
  • Researching COIL: Theoretical Frameworks and Methodological Approaches
  • Fostering, Assessing and Evaluating Competences in COIL-enhanced Courses
  • Critical Incidents, Meltdowns and Teachable Moments in COIL-enhanced Courses
  • COIL Anything: Engaging New Disciplines and Inter-Disciplines
  • Bottom-Up or Top-Down: The Shape and Evolution of COIL Campus Initiatives. What Works?
  • COIL, Virtual Exchange and Telecollaboration: Lessons Learnt and Evolving Practices
  • Instructional Designers, International Programs and other Support in the Success of COIL
  • COIL as a Vector for Increased Participation in Study Abroad and Internationalization Initiatives
  • Making Pedagogically Informed Choices About Educational Technology in COIL

Possible presentation types include:

  • Individual Presentations (up to 30 minutes)
  • Panel Presentations (30, 45, or 60 minutes)
  • Working Group Roundtable Discussions (30, 45, or 60 minutes)
  • Mini-Workshops (30, 45, or 60 minutes)
  • Hands-on Demos (30, 45, or 60 minutes)

Note: All times above (except Pecha Kucha) must include at least 10 minutes for substantive Q&A after the presentation. Any session can be designed to include remote presenters via videoconference or other technologies. Be creative in proposing presentation formats, as alternative and innovative formats are highly encouraged.

Pre-conference workshops:

As part of this CFP, we also welcome proposals from teams of at least two people with the ideas and topics they would like to address in a 3-hour pre-conference workshop. These workshops will take place Sunday April 25, 2016 from 2pm to 5pm. Two half-price conference registrations will be offered to teams who are accepted and deliver the workshop. The workshops should fit within the themes and topics above for the 2016 Conference. Past workshops have included:

  • Negotiating COIL Course Design Using an Instructional Design Planning Framework and Toolkit
  • IT Tools for Enhancing Intercultural Competency Amongst Today's Students
  • Strategies for Creating Dynamic Intercultural Relationships
  • Building Community through Synchronous Sessions
  • Pedagogies, Technologies and Digital Worlds

Proposal Requirements:

Proposals should include the following information:

  • Presentation Title (up to 15 words)*
  • Type of session (e.g. panel, individual presentation, workshop, etc.)
  • Proposed duration of session (see parameters, above)
  • Theme(s) which you feel best fit your proposed presentation
  • Name, email, and phone number of primary contact or session chairperson (questions and status of the proposal will be communicated to this person)
  • Name, institutional/departmental affiliation, position, and a brief biography (up to 75 words) for each participant in the presentation*
  • 50-75 word abstract of the session*
  • Up to 750 word description of the session, identifying what will be presented in the session, the target audience, and the delivery format
    • For presentations based upon research please including a concise description of the research context and questions, methods used, preliminary or final results, as well as some of the conclusions and interpretations.
    • For presentations focused on reflective practice, please describe the context, problem, approach, and results for the areas of focus in your presentation.
    • For workshop submissions, please include the objectives of the workshop as well as the expected outcomes and takeaways for attendees.
  • 3 key points audience members will learn from the session
  • Technology and audio/visual requirements, including time zone of any remote presenters

All submissions must be received by February 8, 2016 at 11:59pm NYC time. Only complete proposals will be considered. All submissions must be submitted electronically via the Conference Call for Proposals website listed below and managed by Ex Ordo.

Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposal application by late February. If they are accepted after the earlybird deadline has passed, presenters will be given a code to allow them to still register at the discounted rates. Unfortunately we are not able to offer a further discounted presenter rate to the event.

* This information will be used for the conference website, mailings and handouts if the proposal presentation is accepted. By submitting a proposal applicants agree to this information being used for such promotional materials for the conference. If your proposal is accepted you will also be asked for digital photographs of each member of your panel for the conference program and other promotional materials. The COIL Center reserves the right to edit/modify any information that is used in conference related materials.

Note: The COIL Conference session review committee will try to accommodate the session type, duration, and other requests for accepted presenters. However, in order to create the agenda, the conference team reserves the right to modify session parameters. Any changes will be communicated to accepted presenters, we may also contact applicants to suggest alternatives prior to their proposal being accepted/rejected.

We also plan to again offer a live conference webcast and post a video archive to the COIL Center’s website. This is to allow individuals around the world that may not be able to attend for geographic, political or financial reasons to benefit from the informative sessions at the event. Presenters will be asked to sign a consent and release form prior to their arrival at the conference.
