    Julie Ficarra joins us COIL's new Program Coordinator for International Collaborations!

    Julie’s position is underwritten by the recent renewal of SUNY’s grant from Santander Universities (more details to be announced this summer). She will be actively involved in supporting and developing that project. She will also be taking a lead role in our communications strategies both at SUNY for our growing Nodal Network, as well as with our constituencies around the world. Her role will also include significant involvement with COIL’s ever evolving annual conference.

    Below is the Julie’s short bio, highlighting her wide-ranging experience and being a proud SUNY graduate! Please join us in welcoming Julie as the 4th full-time member of the COIL team! You can reach her julie.ficarra@suny.edu.

    Julie Ficarra joins COIL from the University of South Florida where she has been responsible for African, Middle Eastern and French education abroad programs.  Previously, she worked in International Programs at the University at Buffalo and Harvard College, as well in International Student Advising at the University of Northern Virginia’s Prague Campus. Julie was an Una Chapman Cox Fellow at the Department of State and held assignments in the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs in Washington, D.C and in Public Diplomacy at the American Embassy in Mbabane, Swaziland.  She received her B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and International Studies from the University at Buffalo, and was a participant on SUNY study abroad programs in Tanzania, England and Czech Republic.  Julie holds an Ed.M in International Education Policy from Harvard University.

  • Report from COIL's 5th Conference (April 3-4, 2013)

    Can Globally Networked Learning Anchor Internationalization in the Curricular Mainstream?

    The above question was addressed at COIL’s annual conference, which continues to grow as the preeminent international conference in GNL. Thanks to a unique two-venue structure utilizing the Global Center and the Central Synagogue’s Beir Chapel, we welcomed a record number of attendees.  The 200+ professors, instructional technologists, international educators, and administrators came from 35 SUNY campuses, as well as more than 70 other institutions around the U.S. and abroad. Over 100 others attended via our free live webcast. We continue to expand the event’s international presence, including nearly 50 international attendees from 18 countries this year.

    A wide range of plenary and breakout sessions included remarks from SUNY’s Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and Provost David Lavallee, as well as a keynote address from noted internationalization scholar Hans de Wit. We also tripled the breakout sessions offered to more than 30, including presentations from many COIL Institute teams and our international Call for Presentations.

    Among this year’s highlights was an introduction to the growing COIL International Partner Network. This included the opportunity for attendees to hear from partners from Belgium, Mexico, Slovakia, Turkey, and the UK. Another highlight was the initial announcement of a new award to recognize internationalization through technology to be administered jointly by COIL and the American Council on Education (ACE). More details will follow this summer.
